Orientations Programme for Fresh Batch of MSc Students:
Institute of Science, Nirma University organized a week-long Orientation Programme from
July 7 to 11, 2025 for the MSc freshers of Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry disciplines. During the inaugural session, students were given a warm welcome by Prof Sarat Dalai, Director, Institute of Science. Prof Gaurisankar Sa, ICMR Emeritus Scientist, Former NASI Platinum Jubilee Senior Professor and Ex-Chairman of Molecular Medicine at Bose Institute, Kolkata was the Chief Guest of the occasion. He delivered a motivational speech as well as a Keynote lecture on “Decoding cancer: Tracing my path from chemotherapeutics to immune-based strategies”. Dr Anup Singh, Director General of Nirma University, presided over the inaugural function to welcome the students.
Several eminent external speakers delivered talks during the Orientation Program. Prof S P Singh, Former Professor & Head, Department of Biosciences, Saurashtra University, Rajkot spoke on adaptations and diversity of microorganisms in extreme habitats. Prof Hyacinth Highland, Former Professor from Dept of Zoology, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad discussed the recent advances in in-vitro fertilization. Dr Dhiraj Bhatia, Associate Professor from IIT-Gandhinagar, enlightened the students about DNA nanodevices for biomedical applications. Dr Dolatsinh Jhala, Associate Professor from GTU, Ahmedabad, delivered an expert talk on Phage Therapy as an alternative to antibiotics in the age of multidrug resistance. Dr Shomen Mukherjee, Associate Professor from Ahmedabad University delivered an expert talk on Eco-Evolutionary Feedbacks. The students were also explained the importance of Time management by Dr Dhaval Pujara, Director, School of Technology, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Gandhinagar; the opportunities of Entrepreneurship as a career choice by Dr SB Sareen, Former Director, Dept. of Projects (Govt.), Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad; and ‘Confidence Building’ by Mr Vincent Vaz, Former Counsellor, NU and Motivational Speaker. Dr Minal Trivedi, Dean of the Faculty of Science at Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya and Principal of the HVHP Institute of Post Graduate Studies and Research at Kadi, discussed about skill development and education in the age of Industry 5.0. Similarly, awareness about cracking CSIR – NET exam was created by Dr Shikha Pandey. Several other speakers within and outside Nirma University were invited to speak on personality development and enhancing soft skills. Institute of Science faculty members and officers described the salient features of MSc Program, Exams and assessment, and also briefed about various extra-curricular and social extension activities, anti-ragging policies, placement cell activities and Women Development Cell at the Institute. Other speakers from Nirma University spoke on a variety of topics, including ‘Artificial Intelligence’ by Dr Swati Jain, Institute of Technology; ‘Cyber security’ by Dr Sharda Valiveti, Institute of Technology and ‘Library Resources’ by Sr. Asst. Librarian Mr Virendra Goswami. The sessions were very well received by the students. Dr Nasreen Munshi, Assistant Professor, ISNU coordinated the programme with other ISNU faculty members.
